Before you start.
Once your workspace access is activated, prepare a CSV or XLSX file up to 25 MiB, with clear column headings and one observation per row. For an Excel workbook, choose one worksheet per dataset.
A small dataset to learn with.
The starter file contains 12 synthetic rows in two groups. For this exercise, every row is a different independent sample. These are invented values, not research findings.
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
sample_id | A unique sample identifier, such as C01 or T01. |
group | Control or Treatment; the grouping category. |
measurement | The numeric response to visualize. |
Create your first figure.
- Choose Create Project and upload
plotx-starter.csv. - Name the project, for example “First figure,” and enter a short research question. Use an exploratory design for this exercise.
- Choose Compare groups for what the figures should show.
- Under Rows contain, choose Individual observations. Map Treatment / group to
groupand selectsample_idas the experimental-unit identifier. Leave sampling time unselected. - For this synthetic exercise, confirm that different experimental units are independent. Leave repeated sampling and technical repeats unselected. Confirm the variable roles and observation structure.
- Select
measurement, then choose a suitable plot such as Mean points. Usegroupas the grouping or horizontal-axis variable. - Generate the plot. Open Edit Figure to review the configuration and save any changes.
For your own dataset, confirm the real unit structure rather than copying the example’s independence choices.
Take the result with you.
Select the saved figure’s checkbox and choose Export Selected. Pick an image format for a ZIP bundle, or choose PDF Report. Add a caption, review the export settings and select Export Figures.
When the export succeeds, the download starts automatically where the browser allows it. The Download button remains available as a fallback. Check the file before using it in a report.
Common questions.
Why can’t I continue to plot selection?
Choose an observation type, confirm the required variable roles and observation structure, and select at least one numeric measurement. Review any message shown by the workspace.
Why is my measurement not available?
Check the import preview and column type. A column containing numbers mixed with text, units or unexpected symbols may need cleaning in the source spreadsheet before reimporting.
Why does the chart show sample IDs instead of groups?
Review the group mapping and the figure’s horizontal-axis configuration. For the starter group comparison, use group for the categories, not sample_id.
Do I need to upload a research synopsis?
No. A synopsis is optional. You can begin with the dataset, a project name and a short description of the research question.
The export finished, but no file opened. What should I do?
Check your browser’s downloads. If the automatic download was blocked, use the Download button shown after the export succeeds. Your export is also saved in the project’s Report section.
Can I register for a new account?
Yes. Create an account, verify your email and request a subscription. PlotX will contact you to arrange payment and activate access.
